by Laura Barns
6min read
Plant-based milks are soaring in popularity, and we are so here for it. Here’s our pick of the best based on value, taste and how easy it is to get your hands on it.
Oatly Barista Edition
Creamy and all-round dreamy, this edition from Oatly features Swedish oats (fancy) and is packed with fibre and protein. AKA your coffee’s new best friend.
Best for: those who want a traditional latte
Average price: £1.85
Availability: 3/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 4/5
Plenish Cashew M*lk
A good source of protein with zero nasties, this m*lk tastes great in smoothies, meaning it’s the ultimate gym buddy. Not the easiest to find in stores just yet, you may be best ordering online.
Best for: powering a workout
Average price: £2.50
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Koko Dairy Free Original
Smooth, rich and satisfying, this coconut milk is thicker than other ones we’ve tried. So we love it in porridge, adding some oomph to vegan bakes/cooking, and Pina Coladas, of course.
Best for: vegan baking and cooking
Average price: £1.20
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Alpro Soya
Let’s call this one the ‘gateway’ vegan milk, because although some of our team are Oatly ‘til they die, soya is the most popular choice on the market, and Alpro is one of the most recognised brands. It’s also the most nutritionally-similar to cows’ milk.
Best for: new vegans, or plant-based milk newbies on the go
Average price: £1.99
Availability: 5/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 4/5
Rude Health Almond Drink
Almond is named the worst plant-based culprit in terms of sustainability. However, by switching from cows milk, you’re still onto a winner. This is our favourite of almond milks, made with rice and a dash of cold-pressed sunflower oil.
Best for: lovers of nuts
Average price: £1.50
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Minor Figures
A popular favourite in the allplants kitchen, Minor Figures has a background in coffee. Add to any roast, and enjoy the natural sweetness, density, balance and silky micro-foam when steamed.
Best for: coffee aficionados
Average price: £2
Accessibility: 2/5
Taste: 5/5
Overall rating: 5/5
Rice Dream Organic Rice Drink
The least allergenic of all non-dairy milk alternatives, rice milk is made from milled rice and water and is naturally sweet and creamy. This one is also gluten and wheat-free.
Best for: those with allergies (and/or on a budget!)
Average price: £1
Availability: 3/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 4/5
Rebel Kitchen Whole Dairy Free Organic Mylk
This dairy-free alternative uses coconut cream as its base, with full-fat, semi-skimmed and skimmed varieties on offer. Find it in the milk aisle of bigger supermarkets or health stores.
