Are Churros Vegan?
1min read
Churros are a sweet treat popular in several countries in Europe and Central America, but are they vegan? Find out here.
A little bit of history
The origins of churros are unknown, but it’s presumed that their origins are in Either Spain or Portugal. There is some evidence that churros were made by shepherds centuries ago as a substitute for fresh bakes; it is also believed that churros are named after the shape of the horns of the churro breed of sheep found in the mountainous region of Spain.
It is now a common street food in many countries, specifically in Spain, portugal, and Ibero-America.
What are they made from?
Churros are made from a very simple combination of flour, salt, water, to form a paste which can then be piped through a star-shaped nozzle and fried.
Are they vegan?
Generally, yes, they are! This is because traditionally it is made with only these three vegan ingredients. What would in theory prevent churros from being vegan is what it is often accompanied with. In Spain and much of Ibero-America, it is common to dip churros in a hot chocolate drink or sauce, which may contain milk. In this instance, it’s always best to ask if milk chocolate and milk products have been used.
It’s also worth mentioning that some less-traditional churros are filled with a chocolate filling — often milk chocolate — so these aren’t vegan friendly.
