Are Gherkins Vegan?

These sharp and tangy pickles might often be paired with burgers, but does that mean they’re not suitable for someone on a plant-based diet?

Gherkins

Gherkins are pickled cucumbers (that are either sliced or whole) that have been fermented and preserved in either a salty brine or vinegar. The acidity of the brine helps perform lacto-fermentation with the cucumber, resulting in the sharp and tasty gherkins we know and love.

It’s thought that the gherkins origin belongs to the workers who built the Great Wall of China!

Are gherkins vegan?

Yes, gherkins that have been pickled in brine or vinegar are vegan and suitable for anyone on a plant-based diet.
