There are lots of health foods that people are constantly raving about, and wheatgrass is one of them. So what exactly is it, and what are the benefits of wheatgrass as a supplement? Read on here to find out.
What is wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is the first sprouted leaves of the wheat plant. Despite being cut from wheat, wheatgrass is actually gluten-free due to it being cut before the seeds have developed gluten in them (though those with Coeliac’s disease should be careful of cross-contamination).
What are the benefits of wheatgrass?
- It can boost your immune system, and help fight infections, according to a 2015 study.
- Great source of antioxidants, which is necessary to protect cells from damage from free radicals
- A source of iron, calcium, vitamins A, K, C and E, as well as containing 17 amino acids.
- It can help lower cholesterol levels, according to a 2010 study.
How to incorporate wheatgrass into your diet
Wheatgrass is often consumed in juices and can be found in health stores in powder form for you to add to juices and smoothies. You can also find it in tablet form if you want to take it in supplements.
