Have You Tried Violife’s Mediterranean Style Grill Me (Vegan Halloumi)?
3min read
Looking for an authentic vegan cheese to grill and add to your favourite salads or plant-based burgers? Well, today we’re seeing if Violife might be the one for you.
From simple lunches to all-out tapas spreads, there’s more than one way you can enjoy vegan halloumi.
What is vegan halloumi made from?
You’ll be surprised at how few ingredients go into making their Mediterranean Style Grill Me, but what won’t come as a shock is that they’re all vegan-friendly.
Its main composition is coconut oil and starches, including barley which might not be the first thing you’d think would go into a block of cheese but here we are. Ground sunflower kernels are added to the mixture along with sea salt and some acidity regulators. The entire block is fortified with vitamin B12 and lightly coloured with beta-carotene.
What does it taste like?
Well, when it’s grilled or fried it has the taste and texture of halloumi if that’s something you know or can remember.
For anyone who doesn’t, it’s salty, chewy and just the right amount of squeaky.
Is traditional halloumi vegan?
The short of it is no, but if you need a full reminder on why then check out our blog post here.
Fancy making your own vegan halloumi at home?
If you can’t get to the shops or just feel like experimenting in your own kitchen, then why not have a go at this halloumi-inspired tofu recipe from Bit Of The Good Stuff? It’s really simple to make and flavoured with store-cupboard ingredients like nutritional yeast, lemon juice and oregano.
