How To Make And Use A Chia Egg
3min read
The world of vegan baking is ever-growing and developing – today we’re looking at chia eggs; what they are and how to make them as well as some tasty vegan recipes to use them in.
Chia seed egg replacement
Eggs are important in many traditional baking recipes as they act as an emulsifier – helping different ingredients bind together and resulting in a better quality product.
As eggs aren’t an ingredient that can be used in vegan recipes there needed to be some lateral thinking on how best to replace them. One of the best examples is the chia seed egg. Chia seeds are full of omega-3 fatty acids and fibre, so when they’re combined with a little baking powder and water its fats and fibre act in a similar way to an egg during baking.

You can easily make a chia seed egg at home by grinding them at home in a coffee or spice grinder. 1 teaspoon of ground chia seeds and 3 tablespoons of water = 1 large egg.
Combine your water and ground seeds in a bowl and leave for 30 minutes until you have a gel-like mixture.
