Almond milk is a popular choice for those who are plant-based wanting to top up their teas, coffees and smoothies every morning — so is it good for you? Find out the nutritional benefits of the plant-milk here.

What is almond milk?

Almond milk is a type of plant-based drink that is made from almonds (unsurprising). Though seen as a popular new dairy-milk alternative, almond milk actually originated from the Islamic Middle East and has appeared in cookbooks since the 13th century. Almonds are soaked and then blended with water, and the mixture is strained leaving almond milk.

Does almond milk have nutritional value?

Almond milk does have a number of nutritional benefits, including:

  • It is low fat and low in calories
  • Good source of plant-based protein
  • Fortified with calcium and vitamin D
  • Naturally good source of B vitamins

Is almond milk gluten-free?

Yes, generally almond milk is gluten free as it is made from almond nuts rather than a cereal grain containing gluten. It is always best to double check the label in case of cross contamination just in case.
