Is Coconut Milk Vegan?
1min read
Coconut milk is used in cooking around the world and is a firm favourite for those on a plant-based diet. But is it vegan? Read on to find out.
What even is coconut milk?
We all know what a coconut is, but actually, coconut milk is made in the same process as many other vegan plant-milks are made. While coconut water is naturally found inside the coconut, coconut milk has to be manually extracted, and this is done by soaking the coconut in hot water and then pressing the pulp, releasing the milk.
What’s the difference between coconut cream and coconut milk?
Coconut cream and coconut milk are pretty similar except for the fact that coconut cream has a higher fat content. It is also extracted differently, as coconut cream is made by shaving the pulp, milking it with hot water and then sifting through a cheesecloth.
Are coconut milk and cream vegan?
Yes, coconut milk is vegan, making it a great alternative to dairy for those on a plant-based diet. So the next time you’re in the mood for a cocktail, you don’t have to shun the Pina Coladas.
