Is German Yeast Cake Vegan?
If you’ve been inspired to make German Yeast Cake from watching the latest episode of Bake Off, you’re probably wondering ‘is it suitable for vegans’? Well, keep reading to find out.
What is German yeast cake?
Well, it’s pretty much as you’d expect. A cake that has a batter made with yeast. It’s somewhere between a loose crumb sweet cake and a bake with an enriched dough, like brioche except that here yeast is used as a leavening agent for it to rise.
It’s traditionally topped with a streusel, not dissimilar to the buttery, flour topping of a crumble.
Is German Yeast Cake vegan-friendly?
No, traditional yeast cake isn’t suitable for vegans because it contains butter, milk and eggs. However, it’s easy to make a plant-based version.
