What is pita bread?
Pita bread sometimes spelt pitta, is a type of leavened flatbread made with yeast and whole wheat flour. The dough is formed into rounds and as they bake at very high temperatures steam is generated and an internal pocket is formed as the bread puffs up.
This style of bread appears in many cuisines through The Middle East and the Mediterranean under different names, but it’s thought to date back to the prehistoric Middle East originally.
Is pita bread vegan?
Yes, pita bread is suitable for vegans. Its two main ingredients are flour and yeast, both of which are plant-based. Usually, salt is added for flavour, but it is very unlikely that any animal products or byproducts will be used. However, it is always worth checking ingredients labels to make sure.
