Is Sarma vegan?
3min read
Have you been craving some traditional sarma rolls, but you’re not sure whether or not they’re vegan? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to have your questions answered.
Sarma
Sarma is a Southeastern European cousin of the popular dolma and is traditionally stuffed cabbage leaves usually filled with rice or mincemeat. As well as cabbage leaves, sarma can also be wrapped in patencia dock, collard, grapevine, kale or chard leaves.
Is Sarma vegan?
Yes and no, really. When the sarma are stuffed with mincemeat then they’re clearly not vegan nor vegetarian. However, when just filled with a rice mix and no animal derivatives then they can indeed be vegan-friendly.
