Is Sour Cream Suitable For Vegans?
3min read
Been wondering if sour cream is suitable for vegans? Keep reading to find out.
What is sour cream?
Sour cream is (perhaps, unsurprisingly) a soured cream that’s usually made from cow’s milk that’s fermented with lactic acid bacteria. It’s often used as a condiment in Central and South American dishes and is generally thick, cooling and just a little bit tangy.
Crème fraîche is also a type of sour cream, but because it has a much higher fat content, there’s a sweeter and less bitter taste.
Is sour cream vegan?
No, as it’s generally made from cow’s milk, sour cream is not suitable for anyone on a vegan diet. However, there are plenty of plant-based alternatives that skip out the diary bit.
What is vegan sour cream made of?
Some of our favourite vegan sour creams are made from either a yoghurt or nut base, like cashew that makes the sauce rich and creamy. Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar cause a similar tangy reaction and a little mustard and salt are added for flavour.
Is vegan sour cream good?
Absolutely – in our opinion vegan sour cream is delicious! Here’s a recipe from Cookies and Kate to try yourself.
