What’s a Bakewell tart?
Let’s start off with the name – Bakewell is an idyllic, Derbyshire town in the Peak District National Park, and is home to one of our nation’s most loved treats. As these stories often go, the tart was an accidental variation on an already existing Bakewell pudding. When the almond paste and eggs weren’t added into the pastry mix, a frangipane layer was created, setting this new dessert apart.
And what we have as a result of this very very fortunate mishap is a flakey, shortcrust pastry, fruit jam, and an almond frangipane sponge all topped with fondant icing, or flaked almonds (or both!).
Over the years many variations have appeared, but the most notable being the cherry Bakewell – distinguishable by its half a glacier cherry on top and usually baked as individual portions.
