The Best Takeaway Wine in London

by Toni Olukiran

3min read

Whether you’re looking to order your favourite wines for a tipple at the house or you’re planning a walk with a hot mug of the mulled good stuff, here are the best takeaway wine spots in London to get you through Lockdown.

Red Lion and Sun

25 North Rd, Highgate, London N6 4BE

Red Lion and Sun is a gastropub based in Hampstead Heath, and they’re known for serving up amazing quality gastropub classics. In what is being called the ‘Lockdown Loophole’ by the pub, they have opened a small hatch offering alcohol, including a range of wines, to takeaway. But what’s the loophole, you ask? Pubs aren’t allowed to serve food or drinks to people unless they order in advance, so Red Lion and Sun have set up a phone just metres away from the hatch to adhere to guidelines. Get your hot mug of mulled wine and head down to Waterlow park for a lovely, wintery stroll.

The Ivy House

40 Stuart Rd, London SE15 3BE

The Ivy House is London’s first co-operatively owned pub, and it has continued to be the go-to watering hole for many even if it’s doors aren’t open. With an online booking system, you can pick up your favourite bottles of wine with vegan-friendly options like the Afrikan Ridge Merlot, a house favourite. They too offer mulled wine (and have a deal with some pizzas) so if you’re interested in walking, talking, drinking and eating on the go, go to The Ivy House and head over to Peckham Rye.

Clissold Park Tavern

177 Green Lanes, Highbury East, London N16 9DB

Clissold Park is much loved in the area for its beer garden, but despite closure it is still running a takeaway service so fans of the local watering hole can still get their fix. You can turn up, scan the QR code at the door and order from there, so it’s perfect if you’re already having a wander around and want to carry on with a mulled wine or hot toddie in hand.

Brickfields Bar

293 Brockley Rd, Brockley, London SE4 2SA

Brickfields has responded to demand by opening up a hatch in its premises, serving a host of its usual classic beverages. Find their range of house wines and their new mulled wine too the location; if you’re in luck they may also be serving delicious tacos too. They’re open on weekends, so it’s perfect for restful and chilled walks after a long work-week.

The Sun Tavern

441 Bethnal Green Rd, London E2 0AN

The trendy Sun Tavern is still open for takeaways and collection, East Londoners will be happy to hear. Hot mulled wine is available seven days a week from 2pm to 8pm, so there’s no excuse not to pop by their hatch and warm your hands with the festive delight.
