The Best Vegan Smash Cake Recipes
3min read
Smash cakes are all the rage for a little one’s first birthday celebration. Smash cakes are smaller than your average birthday centrepiece (but so is the one-year-old who’s birthday it is!) and they’re designed to be, well, smashed before, during and after eating.
Smash cakes are meant to be enjoyed in a way that most birthday cakes aren’t, in fact, digging small fists and fingers into in order to get some into their mouth is positively encouraged!

What better place to start than with a chocolate cake? You might not guess by looks or taste, but this recipe from Daily Dose of Greens is a healthy confection. It contains a small amount of coconut sugar (⅓ of a cup) but the rest of its creamy sweetness is pulled from maple syrup, applesauce or runny almond butter and avocado!

The author of this recipe, Delish Knowledge, knows that there’s already enough stimulation at a little one’s first birthday, what with the presents, attention and decorations that they decided sugar didn’t need to be added into the mix. This vegan smash cake is gently flavoured with pumpkin spice and smothered in sugar-free coconut cream icing.
Paleo, allergy-free and vegan smash cake

If you’re catering for a combination of diets, then this recipe from Bake It Paleo has all bases covered. It’s free from eggs, dairy, grains, nuts, gluten, vegetable oils and refined sugar. It’s made from a blend of grain-free flours (cassava and tigernut) and flax seeds, gently sweetened with maple syrup, coating in a coconut cream frosting and topped with fresh raspberries and pomegranate seeds.
Things will inevitably get messy, so just a heads up – oh, and don’t forget to have your camera ready!
