Vegan Shopping Basket – The Best Vegan Chocolate Bars
by Laura Barns
6min read
Nothing curbs a sweet craving quite like chocolate, and when it comes to vegan chocolate, only the very best will do. We taste-tested some of the most-talked-about brands on the market and rounded up our favourites (it was a tough job, but someone had to do it).
Vegan White Almond Bliss
White chocolate was personally one of the things I missed the most when going vegan. But this bar from the geniuses at Vego helps fill the Milky Bar-shaped hole in my life. The touch of almond keeps it from being overly sickly, too.
Best for: white chocolate lovers
Average price: £2.90
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Raw Halo Vegan Dark & Salted Caramel Raw Chocolate
Maybe not one for those after something that resembles a Cadbury's Dairy Milk bar, think of this as more of a health bar for chocaholics.
Best for: a not-too-sweet treat
Average price: £0.99p
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Galaxy Vegan Smooth Orange Bar
These were harder to get hold of than Willy Wonka's golden tickets when they first came out, but luckily the hype has died down enough for us to get our hands on one. This was our favourite of the trio as the orange was punchy but not too much.
Best for: when you want a hint of a classic
Average price: £3.00
Availability: 3/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 4/5
Moo Free – Mini Moo Bunnycomb
My mom has started buying me these every time I go back to Birmingham to visit, and I'll NEVER get sick of them. We can see why kids love this range because the bars are a perfect size, and the flavours are fun. (Vegan honeycomb?! Winning).
Best for: keeping little ones happy (and quiet!)
Average price: £0.95p
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 5/5
Overall rating: 4/5
NOMO – Vegan Caramel & Sea Salt Chocolate Bar
This little bar is a real game-changer. It's creamy, sweet and doesn't have the crumbly texture associated with a lot of other vegan chocolate bars out there. This is our favourite from the range (though we love them all).
Best for: milk chocolate fanatics
Average price: £0.99p
Accessibility: 3/5
Taste: 5/5
Overall rating: 5/5
Mummy Meagz Rocky Road Original Bar
A favourite with vegans of Instagram, Mummy Meagz is all about bringing indulgent and classic, sweet combos to those following a plant-based diet. Oh, and anything with vegan marshmallows gets our vote.
Best for: when you don't want to miss out on fun flavour options
Average price: £1.49
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Seed & Bean 66% Organic Extra Dark Chocolate. Coconut & Raspberry Flavour
Seed and Bean is the UK's only chocolate company to receive a 100% ethical pass mark accreditation – so if you're looking for a bar from a conscious, thoughtful brand, this is a great choice. It tastes good, too!
Best for: conscious shoppers
Average price: £2.49
Availability: 2/5
Taste: 4/5
Overall rating: 3/5
Divine – Organic 85% Dark Chocolate With Cocoa Nibs
Another option for conscious consumers, Divine Chocolate was established in 1998 by a co-operative of cocoa farmers in Ghana who own 44% of the company and share in its profit. The range contains no soya or palm oil, too.
Best for: when you're craving something naughty but nice
Average price: £3.49
Availability: 4/5
Taste: 3/5
Overall rating: 4/5
Stay tuned for the next instalment in our Vegan Shopping Basket series.
