Vegan Shopping Basket – The Best Vegan Wine

by Laura Barns

6min read

This job is really tough sometimes. From taste-testing vegan crisps and chocolate, and now having to sample the best vegan wines on the UK market, no one said it was going to be easy.

Vanita Negroamaro

A red as bold as its label, this is a great accompaniment for wholesome and hearty dishes such as stews and casseroles. Though it's also light and subtle enough to serve alongside snacks and starters.

Best for: enjoying with a vegan charcuterie board

Average price: £7.50

Availability: 3/5

Taste: 4/5

Overall rating: 4/5

Demaria Bartolomeo Barolo

This Italian Barolo is full-bodied, and acidic with spicy, fragrant fruits. This is a really affordable yet elegant Barolo, from one of the country's most respected wine regions.

Best for: serving with your favourite pasta dish

Average price: £20

Availability: 4/5

Taste: 4/5

Overall rating: 4/5

Plessis-Duval Saumur Champigny

M&S stock a wide range of white and red vegan wines, and this was one of our favourites. It's a lively, expressive, aromatic red with flavours of red fruits and violets.

Best for: adding to your summer picnic basket

Average price: £20

Availability: 3/5

Taste: 5/5

Overall rating: 4/5

Domaine Begude Pinot Noir

This is a fabulous find from an English husband and wife living their winemaking dream in France. Bargain Pinot Noir is thin on the ground, and this is one of those beautifully balanced, near-perfect offerings.

Best for: having a bottle to hand all-year-round for unexpected visitors

Average price: £11.99

Availability: 2/5

Taste: 4/5

Overall rating: 3/5

Sainsbury's Languedoc White Wine

Sainsbury's vegan wines are clearly labelled which is really helpful. This distinctive wine is brimming with white peach and lemon flavours, with floral aromas of white flowers and a pure mineral finish.

Best for: serving with spicy dishes, such as curries

Average price: £6.50

Accessibility: 5/5

Taste: 3/5

Overall rating: 3/5

Chateau Musar

The legendary Lafite of Lebanon, think Bordeaux meets Arabian Nights, Chateau Musar's indulgent, sensuous flavours make it an unforgettable experience. It's complex enough to enjoy without food at the end of the week.

Best for: enjoying on its own

Average price: £27.99

Availability: 2/5

Taste: 3/5

Overall rating: 3/5

Gunderloch Riesling Ortswein Nackenheimer Rothenberg

Beautiful in colour with a sweet, citrus aroma, this is deliciously easy to drink. We enjoyed it best after a light evening meal, though it's delicate enough to enjoy with summery salads, too.

Best for: an after-dinner tipple

Average price: £27.99

Availability: 4/5

Taste: 5/5

Overall rating: 5/5

Cune Imperial Reserva Rioja

The rich and intense palate shows sweet red-berry fruits, hints of herbs and a touch of vanilla on the finish. This is a great crowd-pleaser your guests are sure to love.

Best for: impressing your guests

Average price: £23.99

Availability: 4/5

Taste: 3/5

Overall rating: 3/5

Stay tuned for the next instalment in our Vegan Shopping Basket series.
