What are flax seeds?
Flax seeds are a mild seed from the flax plant, with evidence supporting that it was used as a textile in Ancient Greece and Rome, and was a key crop in Ancient Egypt. Flaxseeds are also used to make flax meal, as well as linseed oil.
What are the benefits of flax seeds?
The popularity of flax seeds has skyrocketed in recent years due to their impressive nutritional profile:
- It is a great source of omega 3 fats. Two tablespoons of flax contain 133% of your RDI (recommended daily intake). Omega-3 fats are important for heart health, as they can help lower cholesterol and help with blood circulation.
- It can lower cholesterol. A study has shown that cholesterol levels decreased in a number of patients who had 30g of milled flaxseeds a day for a month.
- It is a fantastic source of fibre. Flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fibre that is great for regulating gut health and slow down digestion, which can improve blood sugar levels and cholesterol.
Are flaxseeds good for you?
Yes, flaxseeds are a great food to add into your diet to help your gut health and digestion. It’s an easy enough ingredient to incorporate into your diet, too: sprinkle it onto salads, blend it in your smoothies, bake it into pie crusts and cookies. The options are pretty endless!
