What Is CBD Oil, And Is It Safe?

CBD oil is used increasingly in beauty and wellness products, for both skincare and as a food supplement. So what is it, is it safe, and what does it do? Read on to have all of your questions on CBD oil answered.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found naturally in the hemp plant. While it does come from the cannabis plant (hemp is a variety of cannabis), CBD is not psychoactive, so it will not have any mind-altering effects or produce a high — THC is the compound that does this, which is not found in CBD products. When CBD is extracted from the plant, it is combined with other plant-based oils such as coconut oil.
Is CBD oil safe?
CBD products are monitored by the FSA (Food Standards Agency) to ensure they are all below the maximum dose to legally sell products. The World Health Organisation has also deemed CBD oil and products to be safe for general use and consumption, so CBD products sold in health food shops like Holland and Barrett are safe for use.
Is CBD oil legal in the UK?
Yes, CBD oil is legal in the UK, so long as it abides by the restriction on the amount of THC in the product (the maximum amount is 0.2%).
What does CBD oil do?
CBD oil may help with clinical conditions and illnesses, including anxiety, depression, chronic pain and may also help relieve stress. There are currently studies underway to determine whether CBD oil can be used to help manage epilepsy.
Is CBD vegan?
Yes, generally CBD oil is suitable for vegans as it contains plant-based oils, but as always it’s best to check the label of any CBD oil product just in case.
