What Is Circular Fashion?

by Toni Olukiran

2min read

As we look towards more environmentally-friendly clothing options, circular fashion has been a big topic of discussion in the world of sustainability and the fashion world. So what is circular fashion exactly, and why is it important?

What is circular fashion?

Circular fashion is described as ‘a system where our clothing and personal belongings are produced through a more considered model: where the production of an item and the end of its life are equally as important’ by Ethical Fashion Resource Good On You. As a result, the system considers where the materials are sourced, how much water and what resources are used in manufacturing the clothing, and how the model can be altered to remove as much pollution as possible.

Why is circular fashion important?

Circular fashion is key to having an ethical and sustainable fashion industry that doesn’t put profit over people or the environment. Slow fashion makes aims to ensure all workers throughout the supply chain are compensated fairly for their work, and that there is transparency in the model to promote equity for workers. It also ensures it uses products that are recyclable, made from recycled materials, or both. This has a great affect on our environment, ensuring there is as little pollution as possible.

How can I be more sustainable with clothing?

  • Support sustainable clothing brands — shop at ethical stores instead of fast fashion brands if you can
  • Shop second-hand clothing. Online clothes swaps, charity shops, and thrift shops are great places to find some real gems.
  • Buy less! (and of better quality. Big ‘hauls’ of clothing is just overconsumption)

For some hacks on how to find great second-hand clothing, this should be your next read.
