What Is Prebiotic Soda (And Why Is It Good For You)?
4min read
Okay, so you might be thinking ‘is this just the next kombucha or seltzer’? Well, yes and no – it might be a functional beverage, or 'health drink' quickly gaining appeal and traction, but it comes with its own health benefits (and taste).
What is prebiotic soda?
So, all prebiotic sodas are fizzy drinks with a difference – they’re designed to stimulate the growth of gut bacteria. Sounds good right, but what’s the point?
Why are prebiotics good for you?
Prebiotics, fibres that your body doesn’t digest, travel to your lower digestive system and become a food source for the healthy bacteria that live in your gut.
Prebiotics are vital for:
- Gut and digestive health
- Supporting your immune system
- Maintaining bone health

Is prebiotic soda healthy?
Yes, generally speaking, prebiotic sodas are healthy as they refrain from using artificial sweeteners and refined sugar in line with the ethos of other functional foods and drinks. They will instead opt for carbonated water, natural fruit juices and flavourings.
Poppi is a leading US brand making prebiotic soda that contains apple cider vinegar, which according to Healthline has believed health benefits of:
- Aiding weight loss
- Reducing cholesterol
- Lowering blood sugar levels
- Improving the symptoms of diabetes
On paraphrasing Poppi’s website, Travel and Leisure say ‘the soda not only improves gut health and immunity, but also improves complexion, lowers cholesterol, promotes weight loss, stabilizes blood sugar, and improves energy.’
What is the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?
Although they sound pretty similar and are both buzz words in the world of gut health, prebiotics are not the same as probiotics. Probiotics are in fact helpful bacteria, live microorganisms that help repair gut flora.
Prebiotics feed probiotics!
When to take prebiotics?
The advice is a little mixed here – some recommend taking them on an empty smooth whilst others suggest with food. Some research suggests that before bed is best as your digestive system is resting, but if taking medication then the advice is to leave a two-hour window before or after.
