What Is Whey Protein, And Is It Vegan?

by Toni Olukiran

1min read

As more and more people are looking to power up in the gym and turn to protein powder, we break down what whey protein is and whether or not it’s vegan.

What is whey protein?

Milk is made up of two proteins — casein and whey. Whey is the by-product of making cheese, as it is the liquid separation that forms from milk. You will have seen it in this form when you’ve opened a yoghurt and found a separated liquid at the top; this is whey. This can then be processed into a powder and flavoured so it can be added to shakes, food and more.

Is whey protein powder vegan?

No, whey protein is not vegan as whey is derived from dairy milk. However, it is just this particular type of protein powder that isn’t vegan, so if you’re vegan and looking for an alternative, there are still plenty out there — our guide on our favourite vegan-friendly protein shakes is your next read.
