Why Launch A Sausage Roll Vending Machine? A Chat With Meatless Farm

Love them or loathe them (seriously, whoever loathes them, @ me, I just want to talk) sausage rolls are somewhat of a British national treasure. Up there with the likes of David Attenborough, saying sorry when you’re not really, and queueing, we can’t get enough of the flaky, pastry-covered-sausage snack.
So, when we spotted that our friends at Meatless Farm had introduced the world’s first sausage roll vending machine to the world on London’s Southbank, I had to have a chat with them to hear all about it.
Where did this amazing idea come from?
For April Fools Day this year, we told the world on social media that we had launched sausage roll vending machines nationwide. The response from our followers was so overwhelming, all demanding that we make it a reality, so we thought why not?!
Why did this year feel like the right year to go for it?
It’s been one heck of a tough year for everyone, and we thought the British public could do with something to make them smile! Also, we found that more than 30% of Brits had increased the amount of plant-based food they were eating during lockdown, so we thought why not give them a helping hand in how to continue with plant-based eating habits even when they are back out and about.
Why does London (and beyond) need to try these sausage rolls?
They are quite simply absolutely delicious! The flaky pastry and herby sausage filling just go together so well and make the ultimate on-the-go snack. Our sausage rolls are 100% vegan but we really challenge carnivores to give them a try and see if they don’t prefer them to the meat version - honestly, there is no compromise on eating experience whatsoever.
Why do you think the UK is so obsessed with sausage rolls?
Yes, we Brits love a good sausage roll, don’t we! I think it’s because they are so comforting and filling but super convenient, and there’s also the versatility of being able to eat them hot or cold. They tap into so many eating occasions; a work from home lunch, a snack on-the-go or a ‘5 pints down’ kind of eat. There are not many situations that couldn’t be made better with a sausage roll!
How do Meatless Farms stand out from other vegan sausage rolls out there?
I know we are biased, but we compared our sausage rolls to the leading high street bakery’s vegan sausage roll that launched a couple of years ago and in our opinion, there is no comparison! Ours are so flaky, buttery and so very meaty! We really would love people to try it for themselves as the proof is in the eating with this one.
