4min read
Have you been wondering whether gherkins are actually any good for us? If so you’ve come to the right place – keep reading for all of your questions answered!
Are gherkins good for you?
Yes, fermented pickles and vegetables are loaded with healthy bacteria that your body will love you for adding to your diet. Shop bought options can be very high in salt though, so that’s something to be aware of if you’re planning on buying yours from the supermarket.
Gherkins are pickled cucumbers (that have either been sliced or left whole) that have been fermented and preserved in either salty brine or vinegar. The acidity of the brine helps perform Lacto-fermentation with the cucumber, resulting in the sharp and tasty gherkins we know and love.
Pickled gherkins health benefits
Fermented brines contain good bacteria that act as a probiotic which will benefit your digestive and gut health.
More research needs to be done in other areas, but there are some exciting believed benefits that include:
- Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
- Managing diabetes
- Alleviating some allergies
- Promoting good oral health
