Is Flour Vegan?
3min read
Have you had a yearning to get back into baking but want some straight answers before you do? Keep reading to learn more about flour and if it’s vegan or not.
Flour
Flour is the name given to finely ground grains, nuts, seeds, roots or even beans. The flour we talk about the most in the UK is made from wheat (using the whole kernel for whole-wheat flour).
There was some debate recently as to whether flour was whitened in a similar way to some sugars, using bone char. If this is true it would make those specific flours unsuitable for vegans.
Is plain flour vegan?
Yes, it is! It turns out that white flour isn’t bleached using bone char like sugar according to this research.
Is self-raising flour vegan?
Yes, self-raising flour is also suitable for vegans. It’s enriched with baking powder (which is completely vegan-friendly).
