Is Icing Sugar Vegan?
1min read
Some types of sugar aren’t suitable for vegans, be that because of how they’re manufactured or the ingredients themselves. So is icing vegan?
What is icing sugar?
Icing sugar, also known as confectioner’s sugar, is granulated sugar that has been ground into powder form. It typically also contains a small amount of starch (cornstarch or maize) which prevents the powder from clumping or sticking together and helps balance moisture.
Is icing sugar vegan?
The answer isn’t as clear as you might think. This is because some manufacturers of icing sugar add dried egg whites to the mix. As a result, some brands that sell icing sugar are vegetarian but not vegan, so it’s best to check the label to be sure. For a vegan-friendly icing sugar, Tate and Lyle Icing sugar is suitable for vegans to use, so get baking!
