Is Millionaire’s Shortbread Vegan?
3min read
The pinnacle of all sweet treats has to be the millionaire shortbread, why else would it have such a decadent name? But is this indulgent baked good suitable for vegans? Keep reading to find out.
What is a millionaire’s shortbread?
Whether you’re challenging your home baking skills, or after a sugary cafe treat, this chocolatey, caramel traybake is the creme de la creme for bakers. There are three main components – a crumbly shortbread base, a thick middle layer of sweet caramel and a topping of tempered chocolate.
Why is it called millionaire’s shortbread?
Well, somewhat disappointingly, the best answer we could find is that the ingredients are so rich it tastes like a million dollars (not that it costs anywhere near that to make, or even buy).
Is millionaire’s shortbread suitable for vegans?
Traditionally, no, they’re not vegan-friendly for as many reasons as there are layers. Shortbread generally contains dairy butter, caramel again is made from butter and condensed milk and the layer of chocolate also usually contains milk.
However, all of these things are easily substituted for plant-based ingredients – plant butter, non-dairy milk and dark or vegan milk chocolate.
