Is Peanut Butter Vegan?

by Fabian Jackson

4min read

Yes, yes, (nearly always)* yes! Peanut butter is not only vegan, but also a pantry staple for those following a plant-based diet.

*Check the label, sometimes they try to sneak honey in (which isn’t vegan).

Although the name makes it sound like it’s hiding dairy products inside, there’s none to be found. At its base, you’ll just find peanuts, with a little oil (hopefully not palm) and salt or sugar depending on the brand.

Vegan peanut butter recipe

Here you’ll find allplant’s very own Val’s ultimate guide to nut and seed butters! This recipe is simple to follow but does require a good food processor to reach the perfect consistency.

There are so, so many options, but classic and simple peanut butter is always a winner in our books, especially if it's as a thick layer on top of a fresh slice of sourdough toast – yum

How is peanut butter made?

To put it simply it involves a large quantity of raw, shelled peanuts and then a small amount of oil, salt or sugar depending on the desired result. Lastly, high powered blenders finish off the job.

Whether you like it crunchy or extra smooth, the world of peanut butter is beautifully diverse. Let’s take a moment to remember how good it is lathered on fresh, warm sourdough; the depth of flavour it gives to a satay sauce; or lovingly baked into vegan millionaire shortbread.

(If you haven’t tried the shortbread, mouth watering allplants recipe here)

Sweeter vegan peanut butter

If you prefer a sweeter nut-butters but want to keep it vegan-friendly, then opting for a jar that’s gently lifted with maple syrup might be a great option for you over those which contain honey and aren’t suitable for anyone on a plant-based diet. This can be the perfect snack for anyone with a slightly sweet tooth, be that morning, noon or night!
