Need to get out of your fitness funk? Read our top ways to boost your motivation, to get the most out of your workouts.
We all know that movement is great for the mind and body. I mean, there are countless studies out there that say just that. But then why is it sometimes reeeaaaally hard to motivate yourself to get up and exercise? It’s important to note that feeling demotivated is totally normal and natural, so please don’t worry — sometimes all it takes is a little routine change, and you’ll be back on top of your game.
We’ve rounded up our top ways to get you out of that fitness funk. We’d also love for you to share how you stay motivated - leave your tips in the comments below!
Do something different
Exercising should be fun. You should be doing it because you want to, not because you simply feel you have to. And exercise really doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t need to be lifting heavy weights or holding a handstand for minutes on end for it to be classed as exercise. Find a movement that works for you and, importantly, something that you’re going to be able to stick with.
If going to the gym fills you with dread, switch that for a countryside walk. Hate running? Why not go to a dance class instead. Exercise comes in all different forms, so test out a few things to find what gets you excited!
Track your progress
Progress is never linear, nor is it fast; it happens progressively over time which often means you don’t realise how far you’ve come. Tracking your progress along the way can help you be your own motivation. You set the benchmark each session — you’re only in competition with yourself!
Whilst tracking progress might seem a little intimidating, it is a great way to give you a little motivation boost. We’re not saying you absolutely need to track every single rep you lift to motivate yourself (unless you want to!), but just to be a little more mindful of your exercise routine. How did the session feel compared to a few weeks ago? Did you feel stronger? Were you able to recover faster? These little cues are a great way to check your progression, so keep going!
Try a (virtual) class
Classes are a great way to boost not only your motivation but also to help you get the most out of your workouts. All you need to do is turn up, and for the duration of the class you don’t need to think about anything other than how hard you’re pushing yourself (or how much you hate the trainer in that moment...).
Fitness classes have never been more accessible — there are so many online workouts (that are free!) or classes available online. Check out our favourite virtual workouts we’ve been loving recently.
