The Best Vegan Recipes With Blueberries
5min read
Everything you need to know about these sweet, sharp and flavourful berries, plus some of our favourite vegan blueberry recipes.
How and where do blueberries grow?
These small and powerful berries grow on bushes of the Vaccinium corymbosum plant. Native to North America, they were only introduced to European farms slightly under 100 years ago. Our native European cousin, that we often refer to as blueberry, is actually called bilberry. Although very similar to look at, the wild-growing bilberries have up to four times as many antioxidants as blueberries and far tangier in flavour when eaten raw.
We’re not alone in loving this fruit, around 15000 tonnes of blueberries were sold in the UK last year, which is up from just over one thousand a decade ago.
Are blueberries good for you?
These fresh, low calorie and bite-sized berries are often labelled as superfoods and here’s why:
- They’re packed with antioxidants – in fact, they’re believed to be the fruit with the highest percentage of antioxidants
- High in vitamin C – key in keeping cells, blood, skin and bones healthy
- A good source of potassium – great for removing excess sodium from the body which can lower blood pressure
- They act as an anti-inflammatory
- And can lower the risk of heart disease and even cancers
- They even help maintain brain health and improve memory
