Healthy living can sometimes be a bit of a minefield. With so many suggestions for how to live a healthy lifestyle online, it can seem much more complicated and confusing than it needs to be! Stripping it all back, the healthiest lifestyle is one that works well for you — one that you can maintain consistency with , and one that makes you feel your best.

Keep reading for our top 5 tips on how to create healthy habits that you’ll be able to stick to.

1. Fuel your body with wholefoods

“Eat food, not too much, mostly plants” [Michael Pollan], is one of our favourite quotes at allplants. Food doesn’t need to be complicated. Fuel your body with real food: food that’s going to give you energy, is satisfying, but importantly- food that’s tasty and colourful. Eat your five a day, get as many green leafy vegetables into your diet as possible, and opt for natural foods over processed and refined ones. Oh, and eat chocolate (in moderation of course…).

2. Get enough sleep

Sleep is so important for the mind and body, and is often one of the most overlooked factors when creating a healthy lifestyle. Adequate sleep is required for daily functioning. Too little sleep may have you craving sweet foods, feeling sluggish and probably a little moody. Creating a healthy lifestyle should be realistic. So if you’re finding yourself snoozing your alarm every morning before that morning workout session you had planned, and you need that morning coffee to just to say hello, then maybe you need to address your sleeping habits.

3. Move daily

Government guidelines recommend doing at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week. And there’s not a ‘one size fits all here’; movement comes in all different shapes and forms. Don’t like running? Take a dance class. Not a fan of the gym? Go for a long walk instead. Exercise is so important for both our physical and mental wellbeing both in the short term and for long-term health. So get outside, go for a walk, breathe in some fresh air. It’ll do wonders for you. Trust us.

4. Reduce screen time

Ahhh, screen time. It’s no denying that the majority of us are addicted to our phones. Whilst there’s not an extensive amount of research on the long-term health effects of too much screen time, reducing the amount of time spent on your device each day is for sure a healthy habit to create. It’s great for your mental health, frees up a huge amount of time (if you’ve got yourself into a scrolling-induced Instagram black hole before, you’ll know how much time we’re talking about here), and will allow you to be more present. Life is so fast-paced, so taking a step back from the immediacy of being accessible 24/7, surely isn’t a bad thing.

5. Find your fun

And that leads us on to the final point. With more time on your hands, why not find your fun. Do something creative. Live in the moment. Find a new hobby. Creating a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t be a chore, and you’re certainly never too old to start something new, so why not start something today. Why not learn to bake? Check our Development Chef Flo’s baking basics to get you started.
