Seasonal Produce In January
4min read
January can feel like the depths of winter and cooking (and eating) hearty meals are one of our favourite activities of the month. Keep reading to discover what’s in season and some great plant-based recipes you can make with the produce.
What produce is in season in January?
It’s easy to think that the winter months in the UK don’t have the biggest choice of locally grown vegetables, but this isn’t true. It’s a great time of year for a whole variety of root vegetables, leafy greens and other winter vegetables.
Some of our favourite picks in January include:
- Apples
- Beetroot
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Button mushrooms
- Cabbages
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Celeriac
- Chicory
- Crab apples (foraging pick)
- Jerusalem artichokes
- Kale
- Leeks
- Parsnips
- Pears
- Potatoes
- Rocket
- Salsify
- Swedes
- Winter radishes
- Winter squash
Seasonal recipes for January
Now for our favourite bit – what to do with all this seasonal produce in the kitchen.
Leek and sweet potato soup
The antidote to wet January afternoons is a warming bowl of this soup!
Mushroom risotto
There’s always time for risotto in our opinion and this mushroom recipe is one of our favourites.
Creamy cauliflower pasta
When it’s cold out, something creamy, carby and delicious is exactly what you need.
Citrus roasted beetroot with toasted pistachios
For a zingy and vibrant dish, this alternative salad is exactly the ticket.
Tofu, mushroom and cabbage gyoza
This gyoza recipe is a recent addition from our Food Editor, Val, but it’s already a firm favourite in-house so we know you’ll love it too.
Now all that left to do is get to your local market and start cooking!
