by Toni Olukiran

November is world vegan month, created to raise awareness of and celebrate veganism globally. We break down how plant-based lifestyles can significantly help the environment and how you can make small changes in your daily life that will make a massive difference to the planet.

What is world vegan month?

World vegan month is celebrated annually to recognise and raise awareness of veganism, provide resources and make accessible the concept of plant-based diets. For the full lowdown, read our article on everything you need to know about world vegan month.

How can our diets affect the environment?

14% of manmade carbon emissions are from farming livestock, and Livestock takes up nearly 80% of global agricultural land. Changing our diets to be more plant-based is one of the single most effective ways to help the environment as an individual. A study from the University of Oxford found that a plant-based diet can reduce an individual's carbon footprint from food by up to 73%. Researcher James Poole determined that if 350,000 people decided to be vegan for World vegan month or veganuary, it ‘would save as much greenhouse gas emissions as moving 160,000 cars from the road, or about 400,000 to 500,000 single flights from London to Berlin’. It’s amazing how eating more plants can help the earth!

How can I eat more plants?

Over a third of the British population reduced their meat and dairy consumption in 2018, and the number only continues to grow; It’s easier now than ever to eat more plants. Changing shopping habits is one of the easiest ways to increase our intake of plant-based foods.  More and more supermarkets are stocking vegan cupboard and fridge staples, as well as releasing their own lines of vegan products. Try swapping in vegan-friendly alternatives in your weekly grocery shop. From vegan spreads, milks, cheeses and more, we’ve got a complete list of the best vegan products to get your hands on.

If you do love meat, there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian meats that will still certainly hit the spot. This means that you can still cook recipes that you already know and love, with vegan substitutions. It’s one of the easiest ways to get into a plant-based diet.

And if you’re not so fond of cooking but are very big on eating, why not order a box of allplants? That way, you’re doing your bit to help the planet whilst eating delicious, chef-prepared vegan meals. It’s a win-win.
